What is Your Storytelling Quotient?

ASK TEN SIMPLE QUESTIONS TO TEST YOUR ‘SQ’

What is the Storytelling Quotient in your organization?

Storytelling could be your greatest deficit–or your greatest asset? Which is it going to be?

Take this simple two-part test to see.

Identity and Purpose

Ask yourself these question about your organization’s identity and purpose:

• Do your clients and public understand your mission and values? Could they tell a story about their experiences that match your vaklues?

• When your people begin to make strategy, do they have a clear sense of how that strategy will fit into the organization’s purpose?

• Could you explain what you do, in a minute or two, with reference to a story about the organization’s past?

• Do people take a “common line” iun discussions about the company?

• Do your colleagues—business partners, consultants, accountants, vendors, or others—ever misunderstand information about jobs, processes, standards, and schedules?

Story Habits

Now ask yourself these questions about how you use stories in your organization:

• Do you have a clear sense of how to use stories at all scales of writing–short (web, articles, social media), medium (articles, explainers, case studies) and large (proposals, RFPs, annual reports)?

• Do you have a system to “storify” all content on your organization?

• What kind of meetings do you hold? Do you use slide shows? Do these slides tell a coherent 1-2-3 story?

• Do meeting participants share and talk about a common story, which frames the discussion?

• Do you use “scenarios” to explore possible options to campaigns, projects, marketing, and other challenges?

Score Your Organization

If you answered “yes” to three of the first five questions and “no” to three of the second five questions, you might need to boost your organization’s SQ (Storytelling Quotient). Even if you are conscious about the power of storytelling and make an effort to “storify” your work, you need to take a big step forward to realize your potential.
